04 Jan How we spent the last day of 2020

New Year’s came quick with a busy week of farm & freelance work. We were able to jump in the farm car and hit a new beach – Anini beach on the north shore, just east of Princeville. Many people told us Anini was the best beach for swimming so we were excited to finally see it! The drive there is several miles down an ocean-shore road with great views of Kilauea lighthouse and the massive surf.

We found Anini beach to be everything we hoped: a huge reef / rock protected bay with calm waters even with high tide, windy surf breaking everywhere else. Trees overhung the water, and the river was peaking high tide right when arrived – giving Aaron a chance for his bucket list item of seeing the river water change direction from flowing inward to outward in quick succession. Super cool!

We swam for a short while in the warm water then headed back to Kilauea in search of a holiday meal: sushi! We got two plates of sushi from the truck in town, plus a lilikoi lemon bar & slice of pumpkin pie from the bakery next door. We headed back to the farm, put on the live stream of one of our favorite Denver artists (Griz) and danced until we couldn’t keep our eyes open any more… about 9:00pm. Luckily pretty much everywhere else in the world had celebrated the stroke of midnight already – so we felt pretty ok about falling asleep early! We celebrated it simultaneously with our friends & family back in CST & MST at 8:00p and 9:00p our time 🙂
