Karma Trip #3 – New Mexico to Missouri

Friday March 11

We left our lovely work-trade posting in Taos for a month in Missouri — helping Aaron’s parents on their new 5-acre property. The first stop in our vintage 1975, camper-outfitted van (named Karma by the previous owner) was back north to Denver to swap out all the winter / ski gear for summer gear. We spent a couple relaxing days with Sarah’s mom and seeing Denver friends and taking care of a few errands around the big city.

Monday March 14

We finished up around Denver Monday morning, heading out around 3:30p for our easy 160 mile first leg. Our path out of Denver took us south through Pueblo, out old Route 400. It roughly follows the Arkansas River, along which we found a lovely spot to stop for the night.

Tuesday March 15

Second day we stopped in Dodge City, KS where the Arkansas river was all dried up, and toured the historic cowboy town made famous by Sheriff Wyatt Earp in the 1870’s. We walked around the dusty town, found a good spot for burgers for dinner, then continued and parked for the night a hour further down the highway. Just a little over 280 miles for day 2!

Wednesday March 16

The third day would be our longest and last. 350 miles from our parking spot to the Griep homestead, through Wichita and Joplin… brought us to our destination about 4:30p. We were welcomed and a little exhausted from the 8 hrs on the road that day — but happy to report zero issues with the van or anything else! All in all a very smooth journey with excellent weather.
