31 Jan Settling into Taos
We’re loving live here in New Mexico! It’s been three weeks since we arrived at our new work-trade property, and we’ve been busy getting settled. First task was finishing some features on our provided trailer, nicknamed the Hemp Hut for it’s use of hempcrete insulation! We were given poplar flooring to install and several 2″ x 8″ boards to expand the platform bed from a twin to a queen. Most of the project was finished same day, with the exception of a few coats of varathane and plenty of time for the space to air out while it dried. The trailer really looked great once we were finished moving in!
- Our newly-floored new-to-us home!
- Plenty of space for our plants!
We’ve been busy exploring local restaurants and bars, trying out menu offerings and the plethora of free local music. Several places have live music on weekends, including the adorable and quaint restaurant across our backyard – Sabroso. We haven’t tried their food yet but the place is so inviting. The most popular spot, the Alley Cantina downtown Taos – has live music every night of the week! We checked out the Monday night open mic there on recommendation from a musician — and were thoroughly impressed. It seems most of the musicians with weekly residencies practice or test out songs at the Monday open mic! We also tried out the farm-to-table restaurant across the street, ACEQ – and again, what a great spot! We tried the bison fries and Brussels sprouts on our first visit and both were AMAZING and fairly large portions for a higher-end restaurant.

- Great food at the restaurant across the street – ACEQ
- Alley Cantina downtown Taos – live music every night!
Last week we took the time on a day off to hike out of our new location. Arroyo Seco is only a couple miles from the foothills and several trailheads! We walked through and out of town to the trailheads and scouted the area for further hiking. The views are stunning and we can’t wait to explore more!
- Heading out of town, to the trails and mountains!
- The high, thin cirrus clouds forming sundogs!
- The end of the road, at the trailheads, 2 miles out of town!
- View of the valley from our hike out of town…
- The main road going through Arroyo Seco – founded 1804
- The Snowmansion Lodge Historic Building – once a large, 2-story general store!
