Week 4: What we sell at the Kīlauea Farmer’s Market

We had our biggest harvest yet this week – adding new kinds of fruit, leafy greens, herbs and vegetables! After we finish setting up our tables of produce — I’m always impressed. From perusing the other stands at the market and hearing our repeat customers’ comments week after week, it seems that Olana Farm consistently has one of the widest, high quality organic produce selections available.

The first 30 minutes of the 9a-12p market are “Kapuna time” — meaning aged 55+ get to shop first. And boy do they hit their favorites hard! We sold out of all leafy greens by about 10a, and by 11a it was slim pickings on most of everything else. We brought home about 3 boxes of fruit (came with 12), a little ginger & turmeric, 1 half box of sharwil avocados, and some rambutans. EVERYTHING else was sold sold sold!

Since the farmer’s market holds more than just our stand — Aaron and I have been slowly testing out other wares! So far we’ve tried local bakery sourdough loaf, a vegetarian egg+ulu breakfast burrito, Indian butter chicken & veggie samosa, pumpkin spice cacao drink, and we’re on our THIRD purchase of infused, locally made goat cheese (we’ve tried Hawaiian pepper, sun-dried tomato, and lilikoi)! One of the stands is a pickup truck with two giant yeti coolers in the back – selling fresh caught fish! Filleted right there at the market or sold whole.

It’s been great getting to know the community and what everyone is making, growing, catching and selling!
