06 Apr Week 5: More Fresh Fruit + Aaron’s Yogurt
…Better late then never! Just found this draft post I never sent — from Dec 22 2020! Oops!
Since we arrived here, Aaron has been making his own yogurt! We go through a lot of yogurt with fruit and it’s great to have a new batch every week for just the cost of some whole milk!
It’s actually much easier than I realized to make yogurt:
- Start with a good quality organic yogurt loaded with Probiotics. We used Nancy’s Organic Probiotic Whole Milk Yogurt. After eating most of the container, save some of it to start your next yogurt batch.
- Slowly heat up enough milk (preferably whole and organic) to fill the container (about 3 cups) to a boil.
- Pour into the yogurt container with remaining yogurt.
- Allow to sit at room temperature for about 18 hours.
- That’s it! You now have new yogurt!

Be advised that using store bought yogurt as the original culture will not re-populate indefinitely with pasteurized milk since the probiotics are stripped during the process. We’ve gotten about 4 cycles out of ours — but in the interest of continuing on, we hunted for better milk! And since Kauai is an amazing island of bounty, granting all our wishes thus far — we got the contact information for a herd share here in our neighborhood! We are now getting grass-fed, raw milk, delivered to one of our local grocery stores automatically every week. It’s SO GOOD!
